Echinoderm
A marine invertebrate in the echinodermata phylum.
Endoskeleton
An internal skeleton.
Pedicellariae
A defensive organ like a minute pincer present in large numbers on an echinoderm.
Madreporite
A perforated plate by which the entry of seawater into the vascular system of an echinoderm is controlled.
Radial Canal
A structure in echinoderms that runs the length of the arm. Is part of the water vascular system.
Ring Canal
The circular water tube that surrounds the esophagus in echinoderms.
Arm/Ray
Arranged radially around a central disk.
Radial Symmery
Symmetry around a central axis. Fans out around a central point.
Bilateral Symmetry
Symmetry… can be divided into two equal parts.
Water Vascular System
A network of water vessels in the body.
Ambulacral Groove
A furrow bordered by large spines that extend along the oral surface of each ray.
Ossicles
A small piece of calcified material forming part of the skeleton of an invertebrate animal, such as an echinoderm.
Pyloric Caecum
One of the paired tubes in each ray of a starfish that have lateral glandular diverticula, that constitute the liver, and that communicate in pairs by a common duct with the pyloric sac.
Pyloric Stomach
Posterior stomach.
Cardiac Stomach
Anterior stomach.
