ECG Monitoring Systems Flashcards
what do ECGs do?
record the electrical activity of the heart’s cardiac cycle by graphing time vs voltage
vector
electrical quantity that has direction and magnitude
what is the flow of electrical current?
from a negative to positive electrode
what happens when electrical current flows towards a positive electrode?
it creates a positive deflection on an ECG, which is patterns that are upright
the _____ of electrical activity affects the _____ of vectors
amount, size
magnitude
size of a vector
5-lead ECG
- commonly used for bedside monitoring
- 5 electrodes; provides info on 5 views of the heart
- provides info on HR, rhythm and dysrhythmias
- also show changes consistent with myocardial ischemia or infarction, but only in displayed leads
what are the most commonly used leads for monitoring?
leads II and V1
what does a ground electrode do?
reduces electrical interference or noise
what are the phrases for remembering lead placement?
white over right
clouds over grass
smoke over fire
I heart chocolate
where does the white electrode go?
RA - 2nd ICS below R clavicle
where does the green electrode go?
RL - 7th-8th ICS midclavicular line
where does the black electrode go?
LA - 2nd ICS below L clavicle
where does the red electrode go?
LL - 7th-8th ICS midclavicular line
where does the brown electrode go?
V1- centre of chest, 4th ICS
