The use of the best available evidence together with the patients references and practitioners expertise

What is best reliable evidence?
Most reliable research evidence. Research reports provide details that allow the information to be critically appraised so that we know its reliability
How to find the best reliable evidence?
- We need the most verifiable info we can get
- For verification we need details
- Published research should provide full detail
- Other forms of info may/may not give enough detail
What is the best available evidence?
High level
High quality
Low level
Low quality
What is high level evidence?
Systematic reviews and randomised controlled trials
What is high quality evidence?
- Unbiased
- Sound methodology
- Logical argument
- Reasonable conclusions
What is low level evidence?
Case studies and expert opinion
What is low quality evidence?
- Possible bias
- Flaws
- Conclusion not supported by data
What is involved in EBP? -Finding info that can be used to address a clinical question?
- Finding info that can be used to address a clinical question
- Evaluating info retaining the best evidence
- Applying the evidence in consultation with the patient and using clinical experience/expertise
EBP Process
Ask = form a clinical question Acquire = find relevant evidence Appraise = Evaluate the evidence Apply = make a clinical decision Audit = check whether the process worked
What is PICO?
P= Patient, problem, population (what type of person or problem are you asking about?) I= Intervention (what treatment or method are you interested in) C = comparison (is there another intervention you want to compare with) O= outcome (what measure is used to assess outcome)
