Q

What is the counterfactual Theory?

A

It is the “ideal” comparison in a research project. It attempts to exclude all variables except those that are controlled by the investigator. This is an impossible ideal because not everything can be controlled or excluded.

Q

What is randomization in research?

What are the benefits of randomization?

A
  • Exposure to a new drugs, device, behavioral modification, etc. is choosen at random. It is not the same thing as blinding.
  • It minmizes the probability of bias in the experiement, but does not eliminate it.
  • It facilitates blinding

Q

Name 3 differnt types of randomization methods employed in research?

A
  1. Simple Randomization - the exposure is choosen at random. Like a coin toss.
  2. Blocked Randomization - the exposure is a simple randomization, but within a a set block or quanitty (ie- 20 person block).
  3. Permuted Block randomization - similar to block randomization, but the block size is also randomly assigned.

Q

What is blinding in research?

What are single, double, and triple blinded experiements?

A

Blinding is when you keep participants, investigators, or assesors unaware of an assigned intervention, so that they are not effected by that knowledge.

  • Single - Only participants blinded
  • Double - Participants, Investigators, Assessors Blinded, but not anaylsts
  • Triple - Everyone blinded (best option, if possible)
