Q

why is poverty a key theme releating to scrooge in a christmas carol

A

dickens believed tha soceity needed to come together in order to help the stop the spread of poverty and so included this idea withinin the novel. He highlights this veiwpoint by using a dissaproving tone when describing scrooges veiws on the poor in the opening stave . This is seen whne scrooge makes no destinction betweenthe lower class and the criminals asking the charity collectors if there are any “prisons” they can send the poor to. Dickens later mocks the statement when scrooge asks the gohst of christmas present if tehre is any “refuge” for the children clutchinh at his robe to wihc the spirit echoes “ sre there no prisons?” evidently parodying his veiws

Q

why is regret an importnat theme relating to scrooge

A

In “A Christmas Carol,” Scrooge’s regret plays a vital role in his redemption, making him relatable and endearing to readers. Dickens poignantly depicts Scrooge’s longing for what could have been, such as having children who might call him father, evoking sympathy and anticipation from readers. Without showcasing this regret, Dickens’s message and reader engagement would suffer. Thus, Scrooge’s regret is essential for driving the narrative and conveying the novella’s themes of redemption and human connection.
