Persistent refusal to maintain body weight
Extreme fear of gaining weight

2 subtypes: restricting type and purging type (both within last three months)
Bulimia
Frequent episodes of binge eating which is defined as uncontrolled consumption of abnormally large amounts of food
Problematic attempts to counteract effects of overeating
COMPENSATORY MECHANISMS
Non-purging subtype: exclusive fast/exercise following binge episode
Self-concept disproportionately influenced by shape and weight
NORMAL TO OVERWEIGHT

Frequent episodes of binge eating
- uncontrolled consumption of abnormally large amounts of food in discrete period of time
- eating quickly and beyond fullness
- feel disgusted, depressed, guilty, and distressed
Not associated with problematic attempts to counteract effects of binge
Overweight and engage in attempts to diet
