Eating behaviours - Neural and hormonal Flashcards
Hypothalamus
regulates glucose / homeostasis (maintain constant internal environment) – dual centre model // (HYP) triggers release of insulin / glucagon from pancreas
Dual centre model
Low glucose detected by liver – LH stimulated / releases NPY – hunger stimulant promotes eating – increase in glucose – Liver detects glycogen – stimulates VMH – sense of satiety – stops eating.
Hetherington and Ranson
Lesioning rats VMH = hyperphagic – overeat – no satiety.
Ghrelin
hormone secreted by the stomach (appetite stimulant) secreted when stomach is empty – arcuate nucleus in hyp detects it. LH then secretes NPY.
Leptin
hormone produced by adipose (fat cells) increases alongside increase in fat cells in blood (excess from eating) detected by VMH – appetite suppressant.
Lincinio
people cannot produce Leptin study – leptin replacement therapy – 18m 40% loss of weight / 49% decrease in food intake.
