What did Brown and Ogden (2004) find?
They found a consistent correlation between parents and their children in terms of snack food, eating motivations and body dissatisfaction.
What does the social learning theory suggest about how we get our own attitudes and behaviours towards food?
The social learning theory believes that observing others and their attitudes to food can influence our own.
How can Brown and Ogden be criticised?
Correlation doesn’t show cause and effect and there may be other variables that affected their behaviours such as media or peers.
What did Meyer and Gast (2008) find and how does it criticise the social learning theory?
They surveyed 10-12 year olds and found a significant positive correlation between peer influence and disordered eating. This criticises because it shows that peers have and impact on eating behaviour and it is not only parents.
What did MacIntyre et al (1998) about the affects of the media?
MacIntyre suggested that the media and the message it presents has an impact on what people eat and their attitudes to certain food.
What did Powell and Khan (1995) find about body dissatisfaction?
Found that body dissatisfaction and related disorders where more characteristic of white women that black or asian women.
What is a criticism of Powell and Khan’s study? (IDA)
It is deterministic as it suggests that ethnicity is the only reason and doesn’t look at other factors such as age.
How does Mumford et al criticise research into ethnicity and eating behaviour?
Suggest that bulimia is more common among asian school girls that white therefore against Powell and Khan as it suggests white girls are less likely.
Social class can also be a factor, what did Dornbusch et al (1984) find?
Surveyed 7000 American teenagers and found that higher class girls had greater desire to be thin and more likely to diet.
How does Story et al (1995) criticise Dornbusch et al?
Found that in american students, higher social class were linked to lower rates of dieting and had greater satisfaction with their body. Against Dornbusch as it shows opposite.
What did Davis et al (1988) finds about binge eating and mood?
Found that 1 hour before a binge people that were bulimic had more negative mood than an hour before normal meal.
