Q

What is fractional distillation

A

It’s a technique used to separate mixtures of liquid and relies on the fact different liquids have different boiling points

Q

What is the method of fractional distillation

A

Air is cooled to -200 c and the solid carbon dioxide and water is removed
The remaining liquid is fed into the bottom of the fractionating column which is warmer at the bottom than the top
Oxygen and argon have higher boiling points so they remain as liquids and are piped off at the bottom of the column
The temperature at the bottom of the column is higher than the boiling point of nitrogen so it boils and rises up the column and it piped off as gas at the top
