Easy Does It Flashcards
How would I recognise when I’m in diffuse mode? How does it feel to be in diffuse mode?
When I’m in diffuse mode I will feel out of focus. I will not be able to focus on one thing, but rather my mind will jump between a lot of ideas. In diffuse mode I’m relaxing, and not thinking over a concrete problem.
What happens if I let my mind out of focus?
If I’m not focusing over a concrete solution, my mind can switch to diffuse mode. In diffuse mode I am out of focus, and my brain can see the bigger picture.
When I’m consciously thinking of a problem which mode is active and which blocked? What can I do escape this blocking?
When I’m actively thinking my mind is in focus mode, which automatically means that my diffuse mode is blocked.
If I stuck at a problem (refers to [[Einstellung effect]] I can go for a walk, I can sleep or I can take a bath, or generally I can take a rest. (Pomodoro is a good method to help me fight with procrastination and blocking effect)
Recall an episode where I experience Einstellung Effect. How were I able to change my thinking to get past the preconceived, but erroneous notion?
I recall experiencing [[Einstellung effect]] on my work by implementing terminate_after field in USA for ElasticSearch. My mind clearly blocked in the first solution that I found - which was also the proposed for the user story. Implement a fixed value for the terminate_after in the code. Later in the day during I was taking a shower, on my mind simply popped up another solution to the problem - creating a Geometric progression as a function over the number of letters.
Explain how focused and diffuse mode can be equated to an adjustable beam on flashlight. When I can see farther? When I can see more broadly, but less far?
Barbara proposed the use of metaphor of the flashlight beam. The diffuse mode of the beam correspond to the diffuse mode of my brain, and focus mode of the beam to my focus mode of the brain.
When I’m in diffuse mode, I can see broader but I see less details on the objects.
When I’m in focus mode, I can see farther and I can focus on a single object.
Why procrastination sometimes is a special challenge for those who are studying math and science?
Studying math and science is especially harder because of the added layer of abstraction on the ideas. (Example of the cow and mathematical operations +) Because of the abstraction layer, the material is looking like more harder to understand and less engaging. By procrastinating on those hard topics (not specifically math and science) I leave my self the only option to do superficial learning. My deadlines are coming, and I have less and less time to learn something that I find for unpleasant. In the end I will learn something just for the exam, and I will forget it later. Which will leave shaky grounds, and later I will forget everything.
Also I can say this as a waste of time.
What is Focused pattern?
A focussed pattern is a neural path inside my brain. If I had knowledge in a specific area or I had already solved any task/challenge my brain has a pathway. So my focus mode is looking for that pattern and it pops up as. Metaphor analogy is with the pinball machine and the path in the focused bumpers. [[Einstellung effect]] is also connected to the focussed patterns, by getting wrong solution or blocking my self from finding better solution.
What happens when I try to push my brain too hard for creative ideas?
The harder I try to push my brain for a creative idea, less creative this idea will be. However, I first need to focus on a topic, and then let my brain get into diffuse mode. By doing so I will get my creative part of the brain to work also.
