What is magma?
The molten materials in the Earth’s interior.
When does magma become lava?
When it is ejected to the Earth’s surface.

The reservoir of magma deep inside the volcano.
What is the crater?
The depression in the top of the volcano after the eruption.

The channel that allows the magma to get out of the volcano.
What characterises shield volcanoes?
Very hot, runny lava. Gently sloping volcano.
What characterises cone volcanoes?
Super thick lava!

Active volcanoes have erupted recently.

Define dormant volcanoes.
Dormant volcanoes have not erupted for centuries, but may still summon the strength and power to erupt again.

Define extinct volcanoes.
Extinct volcanoes are not expected to erupt again.

What is the focus of an earthquake?
The focus refers to the place beneath the ground where the earthquake takes place.
What is the epicentre?
The point on the Earth’s surface immediately above the focus.
