Earthquakes Flashcards
Where do earthquakes occur?
Where plates collide
How do earthquakes happen?
As the plates push into one another, pressure builds until one of the plates slips. This eases the pressure and a huge amount of energy is released.
What other ‘terms’ are used for the earthquake?
Focus-The point deep in the earth’s crust where the earthquake began
Epicentre-The point directly above the focus. It is the place where tremors are the strongest
Tremors-Spread or from the focus
What happens after an earthquake?
Aftershocks happen. These are smaller types of earthquake, and may come in a variety of different sizes. They cause more damage on already weakened structures
How do we measure an earthquake?
We measure an earthquake using a seismometer of seismograph. The Richter scale is then used to describe the force of the earthquake
What is an earthquake?
An earthquake is a sudden movement or trembling of the earth’s crust
