Earthquakes Flashcards
What epoch do we live on
The Holocene
What are stromatolites
Layered rock like structures formed by Cyanobacteria
What are hydrothermal vents?
An opening in the seafloor out of which heated mineral rich water flows
How do hydrothermal vent help evolution?
The vents expel a fluid that was heated to extreme temperatures when seeing through the earths crust from the ocean, the vents influence evolution of organisms in the deep sea
What atmospheric event coincided with the rapid evolution of diverse lifeforms
Great oxidation event
Cyanobacteria were responsible for the rapid oxygenation of earths atmosphere
Layers of the Earth
- Crust
- Mantle
- Outer core
- Inner core
5.lithosphere
6.asthenosphere
7.mesosphere
What are convection currents that drive tectonic plates
The molten rock in earths mantle below the crust
Where do earthquakes occur?
Earthquakes occur along faults
They happen when two plates push up against one another pressure buildup. Eventually, this pressure is released and an earthquake occurs.
What is the ring of fire?
The ring of fire is a tectonic belt of volcanoes and earthquakes
The difference between P waves, S waves and surface waves
-p waves: fastest, compressional, travel through solids, liquids and gases
-S waves: slower, travel only through solids, vibrates up and down as the wave moves forward
-surface waves: slowest, travel along the surface and cause the most damage
