Earthquake & its impacts Flashcards
How are earthquakes formed and how do they relate to plate tectonics (e.g. focal depth)?
EARTHQUAKES are formed by SUDDEN MOVEMENT along Earth’s FAULTS. It can create FRACTURES in plate tectonic BOUNDARIES.
REMEMBER P-S-S
Describe the different types of seismic waves and their properties.
P WAVES: Called BODY WAVES. ONLY travel through LIQUIDS AND GASES.
S WAVES: Move in Z DIRECTIONS.
SURFACE WAVES: Generated CLOSEST TO EARTH’S SURFACE and SLOWEST waves.
How are earthquake measured? (Mercalli, Ritcher, and Moment magnitude scale).
MERCALLI: PEOPLE’S RATING on how shaken they were by the earthquakes.
RITCHER: Made for CALIFORNIAN EARTHQUAKES.
Describe the impacts that earthquake can bring (tsunami, liquefaction, etc.).
Can cause TSUNAMI which is WATER-SATURATED SEDIMENT that SLUMPS and FLOWS DOWN.
