Earthquake Hazards Flashcards
1
Q
Where do Earthquakes occur?
A
When any Plate Margins meet (destructive, conservative, etc)
2
Q
What causes Earthquakes?
A
The shock waves that come from Plate Margins colliding.
3
Q
How are Earthquakes measured?
A
- The Richter Scale (measured by energy released)
- Moment Magnitude Scale (measures energy released by an earthquake)
4
Q
What’s a shallow-focus earthquake?
A
An earthquake caused by tectonic plates moving at/near the surface (between 0-70Km)
5
Q
What are deep-focus earthquakes?
A
Earthquakes that occur closer to the centre of the earth (70-700Km)
6
Q
Can Earthquakes cause Tsunamis?
A
Yes- underwater earthquakes cause the seabed to move, resulting in enormous waves being created.
