Earth Test Flashcards
Describe crust
The outer layer of earth that floats above a layer of magma
Lithosphere
The layer of solid rock around the earth
Hydrosphere
all the waters on the earth’s surface, such as lakes and seas, and sometimes including water over the earth’s surface, such as clouds.
Oceanic crust v.s continental crust
Both oceanic crust and continental crust are less dense than the mantle, but oceanic crust is denser than continental crust. This is partly why the continents are at a higher elevation than the ocean floor.
Mantle
Layer of hot rock beneath the crust that is broken up into layers
Inner core
Dense ball of solid metal
Outer core
Liquid layer made of molten metal
How do scientists know about the layers of the earth
Seismic waves are used to determine the composition of earths interior
Pangaea
All of the continents making one Supercontinent
Who developed the theory of the continental drift
Alfred we wegener
How do we know Pangaea most likely happened
Continents fit together like puzzle pieces, mountain range line up on different continents, fossils of same animals on different climates and warm temp animals found on cold temp continents
What causes an earthquake
Shaking of plates
Explain the ring of fire
An area of the basin of the pacific where a large number of Earthquakes and volcanic eruptions happen
Epicenter
The point on the surface directly above the focus
Focus
The center of an earthquake underground
If earthquake occurs under water what could occur
Tsunami
Convergent boundaries
Plates move together
Divergent boundaries
Plates move apart
Transform boundary
Plates slide past each other in opposite directions
What is located under the plates that allow them to move
Mountains
Plate boundaries
Where earthquakes and volcanos form.
what are the layers of the earth’s atmosphere from top to bottom
Troposphere, Stratosphere, Mesosphere, Thermosphere, and Exosphere
