Earth Structure, Volcanoes and Earthquakes Flashcards
What are the 4 layers of the Earth?
Crust, Mantle, Outer Core, Inner Core
How do Tectonic Plates Move?
When the rocks in the mantle moves in convection currents it drags the plates apart.
Name 2 of the earths plates. (I choose the easiest names)
Pacific plate, African plate, Nazca Plate, Indian Plate
Meaning of Earthquake words: Focus
The focus is where the earthquake starts.
Meaning of Earthquake words: Epicentre?
The Epicentre is the point right above the Focus.
Meaning of Earthquake words: Seismic Waves?
Seismic waves are waves off energy that travel through the earths crust.
Meaning of Earthquake words: Richter Scale
The Richter Scale measures the strength of earthquakes.
Meaning of Earthquake effects: Tsunamis
Tsunamis are large waves caused by a large displacement of water often due to underwater earthquakes.
Meaning of Earthquake effects: After Shocks
It’s a smaller shock that comes after the main one due to the displaced plates adjusting after the main shock.
Meaning of Earthquake effects: Foreshocks
A mild tremor before the earthquake.
Explain some effects from Mt Pinatubo.
A pyroclastic flow killed all the Aeta tribe people in the cave
Houses were destroyed due to ash & a mudflow
There was no sun for 2 days
A typhoon happened at the same time as the volcanic eruption.
What can people do to prepare themselves for an earthquake?
They can pack canned foods since they last for a long time
Pack clean water
Some warm blankets
A light source
Describe Oceanic Crust
Thinner Denser (subducts) Younger Basalt Heavier
Describe Continental Crust
Thicker Les Dense (can’t subduct) Older Granite Lighter
Label the main parts of a volcano diagram.
