Earth Science Index Cards 3.3 Flashcards
Hydraulic Fracturing
A well stimulation technique involving the fracturing of formations in bedrock by a pressurized liquid.
Tar Sand
loose-to-consolidated sandstone or porous rock impregnated with bitumen.
Oil Shale
An organic-rich fine-grained sedimentary rock containing kerogen (a solid mixture of organic chemical compounds) from which liquid hydrocarbons can be produced.
Hydroelectric Energy
One of the oldest and largest sources of renewable energy, which uses the natural flow of moving water to generate electricity.
Tidal Energy
A form of power produced by the natural rise and fall of tides caused by the gravitational interaction between Earth, the sun, and the moon.
Geothermal Energy
heat energy from the
Earth—geo (earth) + thermal (heat). Geothermal resources are reservoirs of hot water that exist or are human-made at varying temperatures and depths below the earth’s surface.
