Earth Science Index Cards 2.3 Flashcards
The Rock Cycle
Sedimentary Rock
They are formed from deposits of pre-existing rocks or pieces of once-living organism that accumulate on the Earth’s surface.
Sediment
It is solid material that is moved and deposited in a new location.
Igneous Rock
They are “fire-born,” meaning that they are formed from the cooling and solidification of molten (melted) rock.
Magma
It is a mixture of molten and semi-molten rock found beneath the surface of the Earth.
Metamorphic Rock
They started out as some other type of rock, but have been substantially changed from their original igneous, sedimentary, or earlier metamorphic form.
Rock Cycle
It is a web of processes that outlines how each of the three major rock types—igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary—form and break down based on the different applications of heat and pressure over time.
