Earth Science Flashcards
What are the two theories that make up plate tectonics?
- Continental drift
2. Sea-floor spreading
What is continental drift?
The continental movement of the continents over time.
The name of the supercontinent?
Pangea
What are moving areas called?
Tectonic plates
How did convection currents cause sea-floor spreading?
Rising hot magma pushes up, theit is then pushed to one side by more rising magma, the ridge splits and moves apart. Tension between surrounding rocks cause rift zones & shallow earthquakes.
What causes the Earth’s magnetic field?
The outer core gives the Earth its north & south poles and magnetic field.
Which is thicker continental or oceanic crust?
The crust is thickest under the continents and thinnest under the oceans.
What is the Mid-Atlantic ridge and what is happening there?
The Mid-Atlantic Ridge is a continuous mountain range in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. Sea floor spreading is occurring there.
