Earth´s systems Flashcards
Abiotic
Non-living things. devoid of life
Atmosphere
The envelope of gasses that surrounds Earth or other planets
Bio
Biosphere
The regions of Earth’s surface and atmosphere that contain living organisms.
Biotic
Living things. Refered to as organisms
The Crust
The hardened outer shell of a terrestrial planet.
Cryosphere
The frozen parts of the planet like glaciers, ice and icebergs
Greenhouse gas
The gases in the atmosphere that raise a planet´s temperature by trapping heat near its surface
Lithosphere
The rigid outer part of the earth, consisting of the crust and upper mantel
Mesosphere
The third layer of Earth’s atmosphere, directly above the stratosphere and directly below the thermosphere
Salinity
The saltines or the amount of salt dissolved in a body of water
Stratosphere
The second layer of Earth’s atmosphere. Located above the troposphere and below the mesosphere
Tectonic plates
Massive, irregular shaped slabs of solid rock that create Earth’s surface.
Turbidity
The cloudiness of haziness of a fluid.
Thermosphere
The forth and final layer of Earth´s atmosphere where satalites and space shutters are found.
Troposphere
The lowest layer of the atmosphere of Earth. Composed of nitrogen, oxygen, argon and carbon
Upper mantel
Part of Earth´s mantel that begins below the Earth´s crust.
Water vapour
Water in the form of gas resulting from heating water or ice
Decomposer
An organism that decomposes organic material. These organisms take the forms of soil bacterium, fungus or invertebrates
Primary consumer
An organism that feeds on primary producers. Organisms of this type are on the second trophic level
Secondary consumer
Organisms that eat primary consumers for energy. On the third trophic level above primary consumers.
Tertiary Consumer
An organism that obtains its nutrition by consuming primary and secondary consumers. Usually at the top of the food chain
Quaternary Consumer
Consumers found above the tertiary consumers. Reside at the very top of the food chain and have no natural predators
