Earth's Materials Flashcards
Carbon cycle
shows how carbon moves from the atmosphere through animals and plants and then back to the atmosphere again
Photosynthesis
The process used by green plants and algae to make their own food - this removes carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.
Fossil fuels
Coal, Gas and Crude oil
Combustion
When a substance burns, it reacts with oxygen. This is known as combustion.
Fire triangle
Shows the three components required to make a fire: oxygen, fuel and heat
Complete combustion
where the fuel was burned in a plentiful supply of oxygen to produce carbon dioxide and water.
Incomplete combustion
when hydrocarbons burn in a limited supply of oxygen to produce carbon monoxide and carbon.
Conservation of mass
No atoms are created or destroyed in a chemical reaction.
3 states of matter
Solid, Liquid and Gas
Particle arrangement in a solid
Particles are closely packed in a regular pattern and can vibrate slowly.
Particle arrangement in a liquid
Particles are close but slightly apart - they can move around each other.
Particle arrangement in a gas
Particles are very far apart and move fast in all directions.
