Earth's complex structure Flashcards
Layers of Earth
There are four layers of Earth: The inner core, Outer core, Mantel, and crust.
Tectonic plates
The tectonic plates are Earth’s outermost layer which is made up of the crust and upper mantle.
Tectonic plate movements (explain each one)
Convergent: where plates move into one another. Divergent: where plates move apart.
Transform: where plates move sideways in relation to each other.
Earth Landforms
Mountains
Hill
Volcano
Plain
Plateau
Valley
Mountains
A mountain is a high steep elevation.
Hill
A hill also slopes upward but is less steep and rugged.
Volcano
Volcanoes erupt with hot magma which hardens as it cools to form a new crust.
Plain
A plain is a level area.
Plateau
A plateau is a plain that sits high above sea level and usually has a cliff on all sides.
Valley
A valley is a low-lying area that is surrounded by mountains.
Continental margin
The continental margin is the transition zone of the seafloor between the coast and the deep ocean.
Erosion
Erosion is the process by which rocks and soil slowly break apart and are swept away.
