Earth Evolution Flashcards
Evolution
Idea that species change over time.
Variation
Differences in color and size.
Adaptation
Ability to adapt to the environment.
Fitness
If those individuals with adaptations survive, they have a better chance to reproduce and pass on their genes.
Vestigial structure
Diminished in size because of disuse.
Analogous structure
Similar structures, NOT because of common ancestor.
Homologous structure
Similar structures because of common ancestor.
Convergent evolution
Similar structures on unrelated species because of similar environments.
Divergent evolution
Related species evolving differently because of different environments.
Speciation
Species evolving from a common ancestor.
Co-evolution
Two species evolving complementary structures because of close interaction.
Punctuated equilibrium
Evolution that occurs in short bursts, followed by periods of NO evolution.
Gradualism
Evolution that occurs in consistent small changes over time.
