Earth 2 Flashcards
Carbon Cycle
The process by which carbon is naturally transferred through different stores by natural processes
What is Atmosphere?
The mixture of gases in the air surrounding the Earth
Long term changes to weather patterns
Climate change
The burning of material using oxygen
Combustion
Electrolysis
A method of extracting a metal from a molten compound using electricity.
Fossil fuel
A carbon store made up of ancient fossilised matter. Fossil fuels are non-renewable.
Gradual increase in the temperature of the Earth.
Global warming
Gases which absorb and trap radiation – examples are carbon dioxide and methane.
Greenhouse gas
Mineral
Naturally occurring metals and their compounds.
Natural resource
A useful product from the Earth
a naturally occurring rock which contains enough of a mineral to be worth extracting
Ore
The process of plants absorbing carbon dioxide and water in the presence of sunlight to create oxygen and glucose
Photosynthesis.
Recycling
collecting and processing of materials that have been used so that the resources can be used again
Respiration
The chemical breakdown of glucose using oxygen to release carbon dioxide, water and energy.
