Early Intervention Flashcards
IDEA
Individuals with Disability Act -enacted in 1975, reauthorized in 2004 Part A: Requirements for special education teachers Part B: Funding for special education Part C: Birth-3 (early intervention)
this is to help children with disabilities get the services and extra help needed
Early Intervention
Part C under IDEA, Birth-3
Services are usually good for children with severe-profound loss but can be lacking as the HL is more moderate
IFSP: Individualized Family Service Plan – therapy occurs at home so that it is in the child’s natural environment, parent and child must partake–social
The more active parents/families are the better the outcomes regardless of degree of HL
For Part B, school part–between school and kid not so much families
Early Intervention
Mandated to provide these services for any child that has a developmental delay (speech, emotional, physical) or who has a disorder that places them more at risk for delayed development
Challenges with Early Intervention
50% of babies fail to follow up with screenings or just regular follow-up appointments, parents without the support system have more difficulty
communication between professionals
EDHI Components
- Screening by 1 month
- Diagnosis by 3 months and individuals with HL should have complete medical evaluation
- Intervention before/by 6 months
Role of Family Support in EDHI
Family support: Most important–need families on board—in order to have state funding have to demonstrate you are making sure families are involved in the care
- Parents need to be told results–need to know what it s going on with kid at all times
- Culturally & linguistically sensitive to the parents–cannot write it in terms of undergrad/audiologist–write it at a basic level
- Tell them about early intervention and how hearing loss will impact their child–when you identify a patient with significant hearing impairment—make sure parents get counseling and what this means, make sure they understand what permanent means
- need rapid intervention,– most important thing for kids with HL IS GIVE THEM RICH COMMUNICATION SYSTEM–sign, spoken—RICH (deep, large breadth) communication system THAT INVOLVES THE ENTIRE FAMILY
Data Management/Tracking AND Evaluation & Quality
Importance
Data Management & Tracking: tracked and managed by the state all their care
Evaluation & Quality service: make sure it works
What is a Medical Home & EDHI
Medical home: provision within EHDI/IDAE program and typically this is the pediatrician: anyone who sees this kid is supposed to provide information to the HUB—to the PEDIATRICIAN — Need to know about kids medical history? GOES TO MEDICAL HOME
