Early Emotions Theories Flashcards
James-Lange Theory basic premise
(without arrows)
Physiological arousal causes the experience of emotion (we do not have shaky hands because we are afraid, we experience fear because we have shaky hands)
Stimulus-> Physiological response-> Experience of physiological response -> Experience of emotion
Why is called James-Lange Theory?
James (1884) and Lange (1885) had similar ideas at approx the same time
Original Theory of James
(with arrows)
Perception of triggering event -> Emotion-specific physical reactions (voluntary/involuntarily) -> Physical changes
Revised Theory of James
Vitally important triggering event -> Emotion-specific visceral reaction -> Experience of diffuse visceral reaction (=emotion)

Cannon-Bard Theory
A stimulus is processed by older parts of the brain and triggers the autonomous nervous system and the experience of the emotion at the same time
5 issues of critique (Cannon-Bard)
1.Total seperation of the viscera from the CNS does not alter emotional behavior
2.The same visceral changes occur in very different emotional states and in non-emotional states
3.The viscera are relatively insensitive structures
4.Visceral changes are too slow to be a source of emotional feeling
5.Artificial induction of the visceral changes typicial of strong emotions does not produce them
Schachter & Singer Two Factor Theory (cognitive-psychological approach)
Event -> Arousal -> Cognitive Labels -> Emotion
(EVery ARgument COmes EMpty)
What does the Cannon-Bard theory propose about the relationship between physiological responses and emotional experience?
It proposes that physiological arousal and emotional experience occur simultaneously, not sequentially
What does the Cannon-Bard theory propose about the relationship between physiological responses and emotional experience?
Physiological arousal and emotional experience occur simultaneously, not sequentially
How does the Schachter-Singer two-factor theory explain emotion?
It states that emotion is the result of physiological arousal and a cognitive label assigned to that arousal
Same emotion can be labeled something different depending on the context
Difference between Core Affect and Affect program?
Core affect (constructionist theory) is constructed from context
Affect program (Paul Ekman) is a reflex like response to stimuli
