Continuous narration
The representation of events which occurred at different times in a single painting so the same characters appear more than once
Chiaroscuro
A technique for modelling forms in painting by which the lightened parts seem to slowly emerge from surrounding dark areas
Foreshortening
A method of drawing or painting an object or person that is not parallel to the picture plane so that it seems to recede in space giving the illusion of three dimensions
Sfumato
A slight blurring of the edges of figures and objects in a painting creating a hazy feeling and aerial perspective
Campanile
Bell tower attached to church or free standing
Clerestory
The upper section of a wall (windowed or open) or the upper story of the nave of a church
Flying buttress
A supporting structure consisting of a tower buttress and a flying arch which spans the side aisles and supports the upper wall of the nave in a gothic church
Mandorla
An almond shaped outline enclosing the full figure of a Devine person, usually Christ
Tympanum
A carved or decorated space over the door and under the arch of Romanesque or gothic church facade
Arcade
A series of arches and their supports. When placed against a wall and used mainly as decoration it is a blind arcade
Diptych
Pair of wood or ivory or metal panels unusually hinged together with painting or carving on the inside surfaces usually placed over an alter
Icon
Religious image or likeness in Eastern Orthodox. Panel of saint or Christ
Illumination
Coloured illustrations often containing gold and silver that decorated manuscripts in medieval Europe
Pier
Massive masonry pillar that supports an arch vault or roof. Also used under pen dative to support dome
Rotunda
Round building or interior hall topped by a dome
