Child-direct speech (0-24 months)
Primary caretakers often modify their speech to make it easier for the child to learn the language.
Holophrase (8-12 months)
A composite of a one-word and nonverbal gesture to express a complete and meaningful thought.
EX: Blowing food if too hot, holding up a bottle indicating the desire for more milk.
Telegraphic speech (2 years old)
Early form of speech and can be observed when a toddler selectively omits or simplifies words in a phrase or sentence to communicate the message.
EX: no… hot (indicating the food is too hot)
Fast Mapping (2-5 years old)
mental process in which young children are able to use the context of a word or phrase and accurately arrive and the word’s meaning.
Private Speech (3 years old)
Talking out loud to oneself with no intention to communicate with others. The use of this helps regulate organize, guide, and control their behavior.
Overregularization (4-5 years old)
When children misuse regular grammatical patterns of past tense or plural words in their speech.
EX: “foots” instead “feet”
Critical Period
When they find it easier to learn verbal skills in their native language. if children do not interface with language in early childhood, they may demonstrate a limited range of language fluency, specifically with grammar systems.
English Language Learner
A person who learns English as a second language after learning their primary language.
Primary language
unconscious acquisition experience. Language does not require much thought, sound and feels right.
Secondary language
conscious learning experience. Have to be constantly aware of the rules and patterns of this language.
