What was the main intention of the British?

- The position of the governor of Bengal was raised to the governor general.

Why did the regulating act fail to regulate activities in the East India Company?
The powers of the governor general and the council were not defined properly.
What were the provisions of the Pitts India Act?
- A board consisting of six cabinet members was set up to enhance the control over the east India company’s. government.
- This board consisted of a secretary of finance, Secretary of State for India and 4 privy councillors of state for India
- The governor general was appointed by the board
- The governor general had to take permission from the board in order to declare war against native kings or enter into any treaty
What did the 1813 Charter do?
It ended the monopoly of the East India company and threw open Indian trade to all British merchants. It upheld the British Queen’s sovereignty over the Company’s territory in India.
What did the 1833 charter do?
Ended monopoly in the company’s tea trade with India and general trade in China. The presidencies of Bombay, Madras and Calcutta came under direct control of the governor general.
