Tell me about non-operative techniques to manage prominent ears in neonates?
A
Auricular cartilage is malleable in the first few months of neonatal life due to maternal oestrogens
Allow cartilage to be moulded with non-operative technique:
- lead free solder wire enclosed in paediatric feeding tube and wrapped at ends
- moulded to shape in presumptive scaphoid fossa
- secured with steristrips
- worn 24/7
Started as early as possible
Ideally 1yr
Even those less effective seems to make subsequent surgery easier
