Q

What serves as a primordium for development of the epithelia that line the membranous labyritnth of the internal ear?

A

The otic vesicle (Otocyst). (Invagination of surface ectoderm that appears on each side of the myelencephalon).

Q

what bone attaches to the oval window?

A

The stapes, footplate of which fits into the oval window, acts like a small piston on the cochlear fluid.

Q

What is the attenuation reflex?

A

The stapedus and tensor tympanic muscles of the ear are responsible for the attenuation reflex. Contraction of the muscles make the chain of ossicles more rigid, thus reducing the transmission of the vibrations to the internal ear. This reflex protect the internal ear from the damaging effects of very loud sound.

Q

What connects the middle ear to the nasopharynx?

What is is lined with?

Q

What causes otitis media?

A

It is common for infections to spread from the pharynx to the middle ear via the auditory tube, common cause of otitis media.

Q

What does the endolymphatic space contain?

A

Endolymphatic space are contained within the membranous labyrinth. The endolymphis similar in composition to the intracellular fluid (it has a high K+ concentration and a low Na+ concentration).

Q

What does the perilymphatic space contain?

A

The perylymphatic space lies between the wall of the bony labyrinth and the wall of the membranous labyrinth. The perilymph is similar in composition to the ECF. (Low K+, high Na+).

16
Q

What contains the utricle and saccule of the membranous labyrinth?

A

The vestibule

17
Q

The membranous labyrinth is composed of two divisions, what are they?

A

The cochlear labyrinth, and the vestibular labyrinth.

18
Q

What function as the head’s linear movement receptor?

A

Two macula, one from the macula of utricle, macula of saccule.

19
Q

What functions as angular acceleration of the head? (turning head)

A

Three cristae ampullaris, which are located in the membranous ampullae of the semicircular ducts.

20
Q

Wha functions as the sound receptor?

A

The spiral organ of Corti projects into the endolymph of the cochlear duct. It functions as the sound receptor.

21
Q

what are the actin-bundling proteins?

A

The stereocilia of hair cells have tightly packed actin filaments corss-linked by fibrim and espin.
