Discuss perichondirits

A

An infection of the connective tissue of the ear taht covers teh cartilaginous auricle or pinna.
Cartilage is almost always involved with abscess formation and cavitation. - Can lead to signifiacnt disfigurement if left untreateted. Lobe is usually spared

Common causes inlcude minor trauma, burns and ear piercing. Damage to cartilage is not a necessary prereq

Most commonly caused by pseudomonas but staph species are also responsible, e.coli

Treatment involves coverage with antipsuedomnoal + skin coverage. ENT review/referral +- debridement of any abscess or necrotic cartilage.
