Define otitis externa.
An infection of the ear canal.
Which topical anti-infectives may be used for treatment of otitis externa? For how long are they used?
Neomycin or clioquinol.
Which OTC product may be used as an antifungal and antibacterial to treat mild cases of otitis externa?
Acetic acid 2% (EarCalm).
In more severe cases of otitis externa, what treatment is used?
An anti-inflammatory preparation with or without an anti-infective drug.
Which condition is the most common cause of severe ear pain in small children?
Otitis media.
Define otitis media.
Otitis media is an infection of the middle ear that causes inflammation (redness and swelling) and a build-up of fluid behind the eardrum.
Which type of microorganism causes most cases of otitis media?
Viruses, therefore they are often self-limiting and do not require antibiotics.
In children with otitis media and no systemic symptoms, when should antibiotics be started and which antibiotic should be used?
Amoxicillin should be started after 72 hours of no improvement is seen.
What is the physiological use of earwax?
To provide a protective film on the ear canal.
When should earwax be removed?
Only when it causes hearing loss.
Which ear drops can be used to help remove excess earwax?
Olive oil, almond oil, sodium bicarbonate eardrops may also be effective but they can dry out the ear canal.
If eardrops are ineffective at removing excess earwax, what can be tried?
Irrigation with warm water.
