EAA and Excitotoxicity Flashcards
What is the function of Mg in the NMDA channels?
It make the receptor both ligand gated and voltage gated because you need the glutamate AND action potential to open the gate.
What is the function of the PCP binding site in the NMDA receptor?
It blocks the channel. Ex - horse tranquilizer
What are the two types of non-NMDA ionotropic receptors?
- ) AMPA
2. ) Kainate
What are the ligands for AMPA?
Glutamate and aspartate (EAA’s)
What happens when a ligand binds to AMPA?
Na influx
Benzodiazepines have what affect on AMPA?
If they bind to AMPA, they reduce the amount of sodium that enters.
What kind of receptor is Kainate?
non-NMDA ionotropic receptor
What happens when Kainate is stimulated by an EAA?
Na+ and Ca ++ are allowed into the cells
