E.5 Flashcards
what is an Igneous rock
Rock formed from cooled magma (from the mantle).
what is intrusive igneous
Cools below Earth’s surface.
Ex) granite
what is extrusive igneous
Cool’s above Earth’s surface (cooled lava).
Ex) obsidian
How do intrusive and extrusive rocks look different?
Extrusive rocks have finer (smaller) grains because they cooled quicker and had less time for crystals to grow.
what is an sedimentary rock
Formed by settling of sediments that are compacted into rock.
Ex) sandstone, limestone
What are sediments and how do they pile up?
Sediments are small pieces of rocks eroded off by wind or water and deposited elsewhere.
what is strata
Layers of sedimentary rock.
what is a metamorphic rock
Rock that has changed form because of great heat and pressure.
Ex) gneiss, marble
How can we tell how long a rock has been under great pressure and heat?
The longer a rock has had under pressure and heat the larger the grains.
