E.3 Flashcards
what is mechanical weathering
Rock is broken down by a physical process (water, wind, and ice)
Example of Mechanical Weathering
Rivers: flowing water erodes the outside edges and deposits sediments on the inside edges
Glaciers: as they move they pick up and deposit rocks scraping bedrock as they go
Wind: Hoodoos form
from wind carrying
particles of dust and
dirt that strike the rock
what is Chemical Weathering
Chemical agents like acids dissolve and carry away materials.
what is Biological Weathering
Living things breaking down rock like tree roots and lichen.
What is erosion and deposition?
Erosion - when rocks or soil are removed from a surface
Deposition - the laying down of sediments from wind, water, or ice
