E2 Reproductive Female Flashcards
1
Q
Anatomy of the Female reproductive systems includes
A
Anatomy:
- Ovary
- Fallopian tube
- Uterus
- Cervix/vagina
- Breast
2
Q
Ovary:
Describe structure & function
A
Function:
- Oogenesis: Production of Haploid female gametes (ova)
- Sex hormones synthesis: Estrogen & Progesterone
Structure:
- Cortex
- Epithelium
- Tunica albuginea (CT)
- Developing follicles: Primordial follicles (oocyte) surrounded by a single layer of flat granulosa cells
- Medulla
* Blood vessels
3
Q
Ovary Cortex
Describe the state of the ovary cortex at birth
A
Outer cortex:
•Primordial follicles (Oocytes)
- •Fixed number(~400,000)
- •Quiescent: (arrested in development)
- Surrounded by a single layer of flat follicular cells
- Stroma: spindle-shaped fibroblasts
4
Q
Describe the process of follicle selection
A
FSH triggers a subset of follicles to develop further
- Dominant follicle selection (one w/ highest quantity of FSH receptors) & ovulate
- Rest die (undergo atresia)
5
Q
What is this tissue?
Describe the labeled components
A
PF: Primary follicle
