E.2 Earthquakes and volcanos Flashcards
What is magma?
MOlten(liquid) rock from the mantle (called magma when inside the mantle)
What is a volcano?
An opening in the earths crust from which molten (liquid rock) ash, and gasses ascape
What is an earthquake?
Cause by the sudden movement of rock in the earths crust, releasing seismic waves
What is the focus
The place under the crust where the rock or crust breaks first
What is the epicentre?
The place right about the focus on the earths focus
Why does magma flow up out of volcanos?
Solid rock expands when it melts. Ad it expands the moltwn rock moves upwards
How do convection currents relate to the mantle
Hotter molton rock rises ti the surface and cooler molten rock sinkc creatong convection currents
