What is the difference between NMES and FES?
NMES: more passive, used for hand injuries
FES: client is more active, client performs occupations
If you are choosing to use E-stim what FOR/MOP would you use?
Biomechanical, motor learning
When working with a patient when would you decide to use FES?
difficulty initiating movements, when they have little movement and want to get more, if a patient is post SCI has trace muscle contraction, mild-mod tone.
Describe some benefits of FES?
increasing range, neuro re-ed, target muscle, sensory input, can be apart of a home program, increase reps
What are some contraindications using FES
Pacemaker
impaired sensation
decreased cognition
cancer
pregnant
broken skin
How would you use NMES on a patient with tone?
stimulate the antagonist’s muscle to create a slow stretch in agonist muscle.
