Amputations Flashcards
Do higher or lower levels of amputation have decreased sitting balance?
higher
What are types of prostheses?
Cosmetic: for looks with minimal function
Cable: body powered; cables with figure 8 harness
myoelectric: sensors to control joint function
hybrid; combo of myoelectric and cable
Why would you recommend to someone a terminal device a hand rather than a hook?
Hand: cosmetic
Terminal: can rotate them, open and close different pans, cant stain, won’t melt
What is an advantage of body-powered prosthetic?
durable, low maintenance, easy to train, light weight, low cost, good feedback
What are disadvantages of body powered prosthetic?
limited control of grip strength, restricted by harness, client must have ROM
Why would you recommend a myoelectric prostheses?
better cosmetic, better work, calibrated to weight of lost limb
Why wouldnt you recommend a myoelectric prosthetic?
cost, charge, moisture buildup
When considering a type of prosthesis what are two main factors to consider?
musculature, body image
What is OT role pre-operation?
eval the client and determine short and long term goals
What is OT Role during acute phase?
wound/skin care, WB, position, protection, early mobility, pain management, ADLs
What is OT role post-operative phase?
making ADL functional, calibration for devices, fitting and training person on prosthetic, energy conservation, education, balance
What considering prosthetics what are factors to consider for use?
physical structure, timeline, diabetic ulcers, neuromas
