[E,M&S.I] Classic Research: Raine Flashcards
1
Q
Name all the ethics points for Raine
A
- May have caused harm
- Lack of informed consent
- Lack of right to withdraw
2
Q
Name all the social implications for Raine
A
- Socially sensitive nature due to Jim Fallon
- Solution to modify and reduce some criminal behaviours.
3
Q
Name all the methodology points for Raine
A
- Quasi experiment
- Cause and effect not established
- Lab setting
- Matched pair design
4
Q
Explain this ethical implication: ‘May have caused harm’
A
- Small use of a radioactive substance to get an accurate measure, limits the number per year
- Must be medication free, people with schizophrenia may really need their medication.
- Exposed to radiation when wouldn’t normally
5
Q
Explain this ethical implication: ‘Lack of informed consent’
A
- Patients with brain damage or schizophrenia may not understand what the study is about and have not fully consented
6
Q
Explain this ethical implication: ‘Lack of right to withdraw’
A
- NGRI participants are legally obligated to attend the scan as a part of their plea.
- May not have been able to say no to the research.
7
Q
Explain this social implication: ‘Socially sensitive nature/Jim Fallon’
A
- Research indicates that brain structure may link to criminal behaviour
- Jim fallon has the brain structure of a psychopath but isn’t a criminal or violent [pro-social psychopath, competitive, seeks power]
- Dangerous to say that all people with a psychopathic brain structure will be criminals or violent.
8
Q
Explain this methodology strength: ‘Quasi experiment’
A
- No direct manipulation of the variables (already been convicted)
- High levels of ecological validity, referred for scan as part of defense, this is reflective of their everyday life
9
Q
Explain this methodology weakness: ‘Cause and effect not established’
A
- Raine cannot be certain that the differences in brain activity led to criminal behaviour, perhaps the differences were a result of the crime rather than the cause.
- Questions thr accuracy of the findings, and also the internal validity because it is a Quasi experiment
10
Q
Explain this methodology strength: ‘Lab setting’
A
- Standardised procedures
- Same place for all participants (University of California)
- Every ppt kept medication free for 2 weeks
- Each practiced CPT for 10 mins
- Each participant given an identical experience, increasing the reliability of raines results.
11
Q
Explain this methodology strength: ‘matched pairs design’
A
- NGRIs and control group matched on sex, age (31.7 average age for control, 34.3 for experimental) and schizophrenia
- Little variation in ppt variables, making study more valid/accurate.
12
Q
Explain this social implication: ‘Reducing criminal behaviour’
A
- Raine’s research indicates criminals have different brain structures, may lead to drugs veinf used to alter the functioning of the brain structure
- Members of society are better off/safer as those at risk of performing criminal behaviour may use the drugs to reduce the likelihood of their criminal behaviour.
