Classic Research: Raine [NGRI] Flashcards
1
Q
What is the aim of Raine’s research?
A
- To look at direct measures of cortical and subcortical brain functioning
- Using PET scans
- Murderers with brain dysfunction in prefrontal cortex linked to violence
2
Q
Describe the methodology of Raine’s research
A
- Quasi experiment [naturally occurring IV= NGRI]
- Matched pair [age and sex]
3
Q
Describe the participants in Raine’s research
A
- 41 ppts: 39 male, 2 female
- Avg. age of experimental group: 34.3
- Avg. age of control group: 31.7
- University of California
- Reasons included: learning disabilities, schizophrenia, personality disorders.
- All kept medication free 2 weeks before scan.
4
Q
Describe the procedures in Raine’s research
A
- Opportunity sample
- Radioactive glucose tracker injected and took up for 32 mins
- During this time, each ppt did a continuous performance task [cpt] w/ 10 mins to practice
- 10 slices were taken of the brain
- Compared by glucose activity on 14 areas.
- 6 cortical areas/8 subcortical areas
