DZ Selection Survey Flashcards
- What are the eight DZ selection factors?
Airdrop airspeeds (a/c dependent), drop altitude, type of load (personnel or equipment), method of delivery (high/low velocities, free drop), obstacles, access, adequate approach and departure routes, size of the drop zone
- What is the drop speed of a UH-60?
65 to 75 knots (best speed is 70 knots)
- What is the drop speed of a CH-47?
80 to 110 knots (best speed is 90 knots)
- What is the drop speed of C-5/130/141/KC-130 for personnel?
130 to 135 knots (best speed is 130 knots)
- What is the drop speed of C-5/130/141/KC-130 for door bundles, CDS, and HVY equipment?
130 to 150 knots (best speed is 130 knots)
- What is the drop speed of a C-27J?
125 knots
- What does AGL stand for?
Above Ground Level
- What does MSL stand for?
Mean Sea Level
- What does FI stand for?
Feet Indicated
- How do you calculate FI?
Obtain altitude of highest point on DZ (MSL) and add desired drop altitude of the A/C (AGL)
- How much do you need to add to the drop altitude for non-standard aircraft if the DZ’s elevation is 5,000’ or higher?
500 feet
- What is the minimum rotary-wing drop altitude at 90 knots?
1250 feet
- What is the minimum rotary-wing drop altitude for door bundles?
300 feet(day), 500 feet(night)
- What is the minimum fixed-wing drop altitude for basic airborne training?
1250 feet
- What is the minimum fixed-wing drop altitude for door bundles?
300 feet
- What is the minimum drop altitude for a door bundle from a C-130 using a G-14 cargo parachute?
300 feet
- How long is the interval between equipment and paratrooper drops?
Three seconds
- True or false, bundles and personnel can exit the a/c simultaneously?
False
- What are the three types of airdrops?
High velocity, low velocity, free drop
- What is a high velocity airdrop?
A drogue chute stabilizes and keeps the load upright, but does not slow rate of descent
- What is a low velocity airdrop?
The parachute slows the rate of descent for a soft landing
- What is a free drop?
No device to stabilize or slow the descent
- What are the four airdrop release methods?
Computed Air Release Point (CARP), Ground Marking Release System (GMRS), Verbally Initiated Release System (VIRS), Wind Stream Vector Count (WSVC)
- At what height are trees considered an obstacle?
35 feet
- When is water considered an obstacle?
4’ deep or more, 40’ wide at widest point and within 1000m from any edge of the DZ
- When are wires considered an obstacle?
Any wires carrying 50+ volts within 1000m from any edge of the DZ.
- When does the power company need to shut of power for an airborne operation?
NLT 15 minutes prior to time on target
- What are the considerations for drop zone approach/departure routes?
No fly zone/adjacent air operations, Obstacles, Terrain, Enemy situation/location (NOTE)
- What is the minimum ground space required for personnel jumping from a fixed-wing a/c utilizing a CARP release?
549m x 549m (600x600 yards) for one jumper from 1000’ AGL
- What is the minimum ground space required for personnel jumping from a fixed-wing a/c utilizing GMRS or VIRS release?
275m x 275m (300x300 yards)
- Whose responsibility is it to determine DZ size requirements?
Commander of the Air Lift Forces (COMALF) and the Army Battle Command (ABC)
- What is the form for a DZ survey?
AF 3823
- What are the two types of DZ surveys?
Existing and Tactical
- How long is a DZ survey good for?
5 years from MAJCOM signature
- How long is a Tactical DZ survey good for?
Single use
- Who is responsible for aircraft safety of flight under a tactical DZ survey?
Airlift unit
