Dysphagia Flashcards
What is dysphagia?
Difficulty swallowing.
Painful swallowing?
Odynophagia.
What is Dysphasia?
Difficulty forming speech.
Inability to form speech?
Aphasia.
Structural vs Functional Dysphagia?
S: Abnormal oesophageal tissue.
F: Abnormal motility, often = neurological disease
Important Questions on History?
1) How long?
2) Constant or Intermittent?
3) Solids, liquids OR both?
Common signs for Functional Dysphagia?
Longer duration (>months), intermittent + liquids/both.
Common signs for Structural Dysphagia?
Shorter duration (days/weeks), constant + solids only
Investigations for High lesion Dysphagia?
Bloods - FBC (anaemia), U&E (dehydration)
1) Barium swallow
2) Functional suspected - Videofluroscopy
3) Motility suspected/others unremarkable - Manometry
Investigations for Low Dysphagia?
Bloods - FBC (anaemia), U&E (dehydration)
1) Endoscopy
2) Motility/unremarkable - manometry
Causes include Stroke, MS, myasthenia, achalasia?
Functional
Causes include cancer, benign stricture, pharyngeal pouch?
Structural
