Dyslipidemia Flashcards
What are lipoproteins?
The protein-lipids complex, they are vehicles for the lipids in the blood
What are Apoproteins?
A major component of lipoproteins
What is the function of Apoproteins?
Maintaining structural integrity of the lipoproteins, and acting enzymes for lipid metabolism
So what do VLDL do?
Carry endogenous TG (triglycerides)
What does LDL do?
Delivers cholesterol from the liver to the peripheral tissues
What does HDL do?
Removes cholesterol from the peripheral tissues to the liver
What do Chylomicrons do and what is their source?
They are formed at the liver, and transport dietary TG
What is the biggest lipoprotein?
Chylomicrons
Clinical presentation of dyslipidemia
Tendinous Xanthoma, tuberous Xanthoma, even eruptive xanthoma
Pharmacotherapy of Dyslipidemia?
Statins to inhibit cholesterol synthesis
Commonest side effect of statins?
Myalgia (muscle weakness)
What do we give for HyperTG?
Fibrates, they decrease TG production (Fenofibrate)
