Middle Kingdom
Chinese call their country the Middle Kingdom because of the gobi desert Mongolian and Tibetan plateaus and the Himalayan mountains
Confucianism (includes 5 relationships)
Education is important. Relationships govern human society ( 5 relationships- ruler to subject, parent to child, husband to wife, elder brother to younger brother, friend to friend) in all of these relationships (except friend to friend) there is a superior and inferior person (inferior listen to superior). Good behavior and manners (filial piety). Created by Confucius
Legalism
Created by Shi Huangai. Way to achieve order is by extremely strict laws. Book burning. Killed opposers. The nature of man is evil. His guidance is acquired
Daoism
Created by Laozi. The human-nature link is important. Believe in yin-yang and to maintain balance of chi. Chi is a balance of yin dark and yang white. Natural order must be preserved. Acupuncture, maxibustian, and wu shu help maintain chi
China’s traditional social class system
gentry- wealthy, land owners, leisure class Peasants- majority, some owned land others tenant farms and others landless laborers, avoided contact with imperial gov
Shi Huangdi
Considered the first Emperor. he created the first centralized government in China. he connected the Great Wall, built roads, made legalism and was known for having harsh punishments.
Civil service system
A test taken in order to become a government official this allowed social class mobility
Golden age
This takes place during the Tang and the Song Dynasty. Developed gunpowder, paper money, and they made a lot of math and science developments
Mongol conquest
The Mongols invaded and took over the song Dynasty. Genghis Kahn was the main general that helped the Mongols win and he would’ve been the Mongol emperor but his grandson Kublai khan took over because Gingiss got sick.
