Dynamics Unit 1.3 Flashcards
What is Newtons 1st law?
A body’s velocity will be constant unless a external force acts upon it.
What is Newtons 2st law?
The rate of change of momentum of a body is directly proportional to resultant force acting upon it. (F=ma)
What is Newtons 3st law?
For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction.
Define Weight?
The gravitational force that the earth exerts on the object.
1st Law which must be followed if N3 is true
Forces act on different bodies
2nd Law which must be followed if N3 is true
Forces are equal and in opposite directions.
3rd Law which must be followed if N3 is true
Forces are of the same type. eg: gravitational
Free body diagram?
Shows all the forces acting on a object.
Equation for linear momentum
Momentum = Mass x Volume
What does the gradient represent in a momentum - time graph
Resultant Force
Resultant Force?
Sum of all the forces acting on a body.
If a body is in equilibrium then…
Acceleration = 0
What does the Conservation of momentum states?
Momentum is never created or destroyed but only converted to one form to another.
What does isolated mean?
No external forces acting on the object
Define Elastic Collision?
Collision which no kinetic energy is lost or gained.
