Dynamics Flashcards

Definitions from the N5 Dynamics sub-unit

1
Q

What is meant by Average Speed?

A

The speed calculated over the entire distance and time of the motion. eg 40 miles in 2 hours is 20 mph

2
Q

What is meant by Instantaneous Speed?

A

The speed at a specific point. Calculated
over a very short distance and time. eg 5cm
in 0.04s is 1.25 m/s

Q

What 3 effects can a Force have?

A

16
Q

What is Newton’s First Law?

A

An object will remain at rest or travel in a
straight line with a constant speed, unless
an unbalanced force acts upon it.

17
Q

What is Newton’s Second Law?

A

An unbalanced Force acting on an object
will cause the object to Accelerate. The size
of that acceleration will depend on the size
of the Force and the Mass of the object.

18
Q

What is Newton’s Third Law?

A

If object A applies a Force on object B, then
object B applies and equal but opposite Force on A.

19
Q

What is meant by “Terminal velocity”?

A

The maximum velocity of a falling object.
It occurs when the air resistance is equal in
size but opposite in direction to the weight of the object.

20
Q

What is meant by the “Mass” of an object?

A

The amount of matter within an object.
The value does not change with position

21
Q

What is meant by the “Weight” of an object?

A

The force due to gravity on a mass.
The value does change with position.

22
Q

Describe the Horizontal motion of a Projectile.

A

Constant horizontal velocity

23
Q

Describe the Vertical motion of a projectile.

A

Constant vertical acceleration
