Dynamic eqilibrium Flashcards
What is a dynamic equilibrium?
Th equilibrium that exists in a closed system when the rate of the forward reaction is equal to the rate of the reverse reaction and concentrations do not change
What is a closed system?
A system isolated from its surroundings where no material is added or removed and no conditions are changing
What does is the position of equilibrium?
Describes the balance between amount of reactants and products, and is left or right
What is Le Chateliers principle?
When a system in a dynamic equilibrium is subjected to an external change, the system adjusts itself to minimise the effects of the change and to restore equilibrium
What does Le Chatelier’s principle relate to?
Temperature, pressure and concentration
What happens to the position of equilibrium when there is an increase in concentration of reactants or products?
The P.O.E shifts in the direction which will react that added substance away (to the opposite side)
Why does the equilibrium shift when there is an increase in concentration of reactants or products?
The equilibrium acts to decrease the concentration of the added substance
What happens to the position of equilibrium when the pressure is increased (in a system with a gas)?
The P.O.E shifts towards the side of the reaction with fewer moles of gas
Why does the equilibrium shift when there is an increase in pressure?
The equilibrium acts to decrease the pressure by shifting to the side that takes up less space
What happens to the position of equilibrium when there is an increase in temperature?
The P.O.E shifts in the same direction as the endothermic reaction
Why does the position of equilibrium shift when there is an increase in temperature?
The equilibrium acts to decrease temperature by absorbing additional heat energy
